2 Gang Extension Box

Metal
Steel, aluminum, or cast iron are common metals used for indoor and outdoor electrical boxes. Metal boxes are strong, fireproof, and can't melt. They're often used when a metal conduit is used to run wiring.

Plastic
PVC or fiberglass are common plastics used for indoor switch and socket boxes. Plastic boxes are used when non-metallic (NM) cables are leading in or out of the box. However, metal-sheathed wiring should not be used in plastic boxes.

Aluminum alloy
A durable metal alloy that's often used for weatherproof outdoor switch and socket boxes.

Switch And Socket Box Installation: Do’s & Don’ts

Do

  • Use the right size and type of box for the application. Different electrical applications require different sized boxes. Make sure the box you choose has enough space to accommodate all the wires and connections without overcrowding.
  • Turn off the power at the breaker box before starting any electrical work. This is the most important safety rule. Always double-check that the power is off before working on any electrical wiring.
  • Make sure the switch and socket box is level and plumb. A level and plumb box will ensure a secure installation and make it easier to connect the wires.
  • Secure the box firmly to the stud using the appropriate fasteners. Use the correct screws or nails to securely fasten the box to the stud. Most of our products come with the screws or nails you would need to properly install one of our switch and socket boxes.
  • Leave enough slack in the wires to make connections easily. You don’t want to put any strain on the wires when making connections. Leave enough slack so that the wires can be easily maneuvered within the box.
  • Use wire connectors approved for the size and type of wire you are using. There are different types of wire connectors for different applications. Make sure you’re using the right type of connector for the size and type of wire you’re working with.

Don’t

  • Use a box that is too small for the number of wires that will be installed. An overcrowded box can lead to overheating and electrical problems.
  • Overload the box with too many wires. As mentioned earlier, too many wires in a box can create a fire hazard.
  • Use damaged or undersized wires. Damaged or undersized wires can pose a serious electrical hazard.
  • Make connections inside the box that are not secure. All connections inside the box should be tight and secure to prevent electrical problems.
  • Forget to ground the box. A properly switch and socket box is essential for electrical safety.

FAQ

Q: Does a switch and socket box have to be flush with drywall?

A: Yes, the front edge of an electrical box should be flush with the finished drywall surface. To ensure this, you can use a drywall reference strip or a scrap of drywall to position the box.

Q: What is the difference between a junction box and a switch box?

A: The switch and socket box is reserved for the distribution of the pipeline to the load terminal. Its function is to facilitate threading, separation and transition wiring. Switch boxes, socket boxes and light boxes are all wiring boxes for the installation of lamps, switches, sockets, fixed panels and wiring in boxes.

Q: Can I leave a switch and socket box behind drywall?

A: No, you should not leave a switch and socket box behind drywall; according to electrical codes, all switch and socket boxes must be accessible, meaning they cannot be covered by drywall or any other wall finish, as it is considered unsafe and violates building regulations.

Q: What is the maximum gap allowed between outlet boxes and the wall material?

A: Noncombustible surfaces that are broken or incomplete around boxes employing a flush-type cover or faceplate shall be repaired so there will be no gaps or open spaces greater than 3 mm (1/8 in.) at the edge of the box.

Q: Do switch and socket boxes have to be screwed down?

A: As standard switch and socket boxes have no cable clamps this means the box must be screwed down and the cables fixed to prevent strain on the connections. Care must be taken with the connectors particularly with stranded cables to ensure all the strands are clamped in the connector.

Q: How many wires can be in a switch box?

A: A standard single-gang box has 18 cubic inches of space. That equates to enough room to hold 9 wires that are #14 gauge, 8 #12 gauge, or 7 #10 gauge. These numbers are for boxes that only house wires. If you add any devices to the equation, subtract two wires per device.
