Types of UL Steel Conduit And Fittings
Rigid Metal Conduit
Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC), also known as Rigid Galvanised Steel (RGS) or Galvanized Rigid Conduit (GRC), is a thick-walled threaded tubing, with a tubing wall that is thick enough to allow it to be threaded. It can be used in severe corrosive areas.
Intermediate Metal Conduit
Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC) is a steel tubing heavier than EMT but lighter than RMC. It is a great choice for outdoor applications.
Electrical Metallic Tubing
Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), sometimes called thin-wall, is the most widely used nonflexible conduit, as it is less costly and lighter than RMC. EMT itself is not threaded, but can be used with threaded fittings that clamp to it. Lengths of conduit are connected to each other and to equipment with clamp-type fittings.
Advantages of UL Steel Conduit And Fittings

High Impact and Temperature Resistance
Steel is known for being one of the strongest materials, being resistant to different kinds of conditions like high impact and strong temperatures. Resistance to these elements ensures that the steel conduit would not get easily damaged, keeping the wires intact at all times. High temperatures are also present in the construction and manufacturing industries, causing certain materials to break or melt after a certain period of time. By having the right set of steel conduit tubing, you would be able to provide the strongest materials for your wiring needs.
Recyclable and Sustainable
Along with being one of the strongest materials available, steel is also very sustainable and recyclable. Steel is designed to last for a long period of time before needing to be replaced, while also being environmentally friendly, having a lower carbon footprint compared to other industrial materials. Recycling steel is also a very efficient process as well, as manufacturers would be able to reuse a high percentage of existing steel parts to form new ones, saving a great amount of resources as a result.
Non-combustible
Industrial areas are places where there is a high amount of fire hazards present. This is even more evident when wiring is left exposed to the elements, increasing the likelihood of getting damaged and causing sparks that lead to fires. This can be effectively prevented by making use of steel conduits, which are strong and non-combustible, ensuring that any spark or flame would not affect its surface.
Adaptable and Flexible
Steel is not only highly durable, but they are also one of the most versatile materials used in the industry. Steel can be molded and shaped into different parts and sections, helping create different types of facilities, machinery, and equipment. This is also applicable for steel conduits, as they can be bent into different angles to accommodate different kinds of wiring applications across multiple locations. If you are looking for a way to install wiring in different industrial locations, steel conduits are some of the best materials to use.
Applications of UL Steel Conduit And Fittings
Industrial Environments
In industrial settings such as factories, warehouses, and plants, both EMT and rigid conduit are used for protecting electrical wiring from harsh conditions. Rigid conduit is preferred for areas with heavy machinery, high traffic, and exposure to chemicals or moisture, due to its robust nature. EMT, being lighter and easier to install, is often used in less hazardous areas within industrial environments where the additional protection of rigid conduit is not required.
Commercial Environments
In commercial buildings like office complexes and retail spaces, EMT and rigid conduit both find applications. EMT is commonly used due to its ease of installation and lower cost, making it suitable for areas where aesthetics are important and high levels of protection are not as critical. It is often installed within walls, ceilings, and floors.
Residential Environments
In residential settings, EMT and rigid conduit serve different purposes. EMT is often used for indoor applications where a less robust conduit is sufficient, such as in basements or garages. Its flexibility and ease of installation make it ideal for residential wiring systems. Rigid conduit is employed for outdoor wiring, main electrical service panels, and areas prone to moisture, such as garden lighting installations or wiring for detached structures.
Underground Installations
Rigid conduit is particularly effective for underground installations due to its robust protection against soil conditions and water ingress. It is commonly used to run electrical cables from utility poles to homes or for outdoor lighting systems. EMT has lower resistance to environmental factors and physical damage. For optimal performance in underground settings, it is essential to properly seal all joints and select rigid conduit that meets requirements for high crush resistance and corrosion protection.
Special Environments
In special environments, such as coastal areas or high-temperature settings, both EMT and rigid conduit have specific roles. Rigid conduit, made from materials like PVC or galvanized steel, is chosen for its corrosion resistance in coastal areas where saltwater and humidity are prevalent. EMT, while generally not as resistant to corrosion, can be used in less severe coastal conditions or in high-temperature environments where its structural integrity is adequate.
Installation Process of UL Steel Conduit And Fittings

Planning and Preparation
Evaluate the Installation Area: Start by assessing the route for your conduit installation. Consider accessibility and choose the shortest, most efficient paths between electrical outlets. This saves materials and ensures a cleaner, more professional look.
Review Regulations: Understanding local building codes and regulations is crucial. Familiarise yourself with these guidelines to ensure your installation meets all safety and compliance standards.
Marking and Measuring
Trace the Conduit Path: Use a marker or pencil to outline where your conduits will be placed. Accurate marking and measuring are essential for a smooth installation process, so take your time to ensure everything is perfectly aligned.
Installing Mounting Hardware
Secure Conduit Straps: Attach conduit straps or clamps along the mounting surface at regular intervals. This strongly supports the conduits, preventing sagging or movement over time.
Cutting and Bending Conduit
Measure and Cut: Measure your conduit lengths carefully and use a conduit cutter for precise trimming. Proper measurements and clean cuts are vital to avoid wastage and ensure a perfect fit.
Bend the Conduit: Use a conduit bender to create smooth bends and turns. This is especially important for navigating corners or obstacles while maintaining the integrity of the conduit.
Connecting and Securing Conduits
Join Conduit Sections: Connect the conduit sections using appropriate connectors to create a continuous, protected path for your wiring. This step is crucial for maintaining the electrical integrity of the installation.
Secure the Placement: Fasten the connected conduits to the mounting hardware with suitable fasteners, ensuring they remain stable and aligned.
Pulling Wires Through Conduit
Prepare and Pull Wires: Attach your wires to a fish tape or draw wire and carefully thread them through the conduit. Take care to avoid damaging the wires during this process to maintain their functionality and safety.
Sealing and Final Checks
Seal Conduit Ends: Use suitable fittings or caps to seal the ends of the conduits, preventing moisture or debris from entering. This step is essential for protecting the wiring inside.
Inspect the Installation: Conduct a thorough inspection of the entire conduit system. Check for loose connections, ensure proper fastening, and verify that wires are correctly routed. This final check helps to provide a safe and reliable installation.
Difference Between Steel Conduits & PVC Conduits
Material
Steel Conduits: Made of galvanized steel, they are strong, durable, and resistant to impact and physical damage.
PVC Conduits: Made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), they are lightweight, non-metallic, and resistant to corrosion and moisture.
01
Electrical Properties
Steel Conduits: Provide grounding capabilities and can help shield against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
PVC Conduits: Do not provide grounding and may not offer the same level of EMI shielding.
02
Installation
Steel Conduits: Heavier and require more labor for installation. They often need special tools for cutting and bending.
PVC Conduits: Lightweight and easier to handle, they can be cut with simple tools and glued together, making installation quicker and simpler.
03
Cost
Steel Conduits: Generally more expensive due to material costs and the need for additional labor for installation.
PVC Conduits: Usually less expensive, both in terms of material and installation costs.
04
Strength and Durability
Steel Conduits: Offer high mechanical strength and are suitable for environments where physical damage is a concern (e.g., industrial settings).
PVC Conduits: Less resistant to impact compared to steel but are not prone to rust or corrosion, making them suitable for wet or damp locations.
